Founded in 1897 by Oscar Méténier, The Grand Guignol (Le Théâtre du Grand Guignol) was a theater in the Pigalle area of Paris specialized in naturalistic horror shows ranging from suspenseful crime dramas to bawdy sex farces.

During "The Belle Epoque" Era, The Grand Guignol Theatre flourished, becoming one of the most popular tourist attractions in Paris.

After World War II horrors, the Grand Guignol’s formula no longer had the same impact with audiences, and in 1963, it closed its doors.

Check out the Grand Guignol’s website, maintained by Thrillpeddlers, a contemporary San Francisco theater group that's translating original Grand Guignol plays and bringing them back to the stage!

There is a nice vintage posters gallery.
